AMY MAHALA
I am an artist and teacher of textiles based in North Cornwall.  I grew up on South Dorset coast, so being by the sea is where I feel most at home and at peace. It is my natural habitat. I often love to walk the coastal paths to explore, record and re-imagine the beauty of creation.

I studied Textile Design at Winchester School of Art, specialising in knitted textiles. Here I spent a lot of time taking photographs and creating artwork in different media to inspire my knits, which were often embellished with embroidery and other textile techniques. I have always liked to experiment with different media, and this approach has inspired the work that I create today.

A common theme running through my work is that I “creatively use stitch and mixed media to express the beauty and emotions of the sea.”  I use free machine embroidery as a drawing tool alongside paint and collage.
